Relevance. The frequency of dental anomalies is constantly increasing, which increases the need for high-quality and accurate diagnosis before orthodontic treatment. Correct prediction of the transversal dimensions of the dental arches is an important condition for the successful implementation of orthodontic manipulations and the prevention of complications such as lack of space or excessive expansion of the dentition. In orthodontic practice, the Pont index is widely used to determine the ideal width of the dentition based on measurements of the total width of the four upper incisors. However, the applicability of this index may vary depending on regional circumstances. The aim of the study was to evaluate the correspondence of the transversal dimensions of the dental arches of patients from St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region to the calculated values obtained using Pont method. Materials and methods. A single-stage clinical and experimental study was conducted on diagnostic models of 200 patients aged 18 to 35 years who had not previously undergone orthodontic treatment. The total mesio-distal width of the four upper incisors, the interpremolar and intermolar distances were measured. The data obtained were compared with the calculated values calculated according to the Pont method. Statistical processing included descriptive analysis, correlation assessment, and regression analysis. Results. A statistically significant discrepancy between the actual transversal dimensions of the dental arches and the calculated values of the Pont index was revealed. The average interpremolar distance was 1.5 mm less than the calculated distance, and the intermolar distance was 1.25 mm less. Despite the established correlation, regression analysis showed that the Pont’s method model explains only about 35% of the variation in the actual size of dental arches, which indicates the need to take into account additional parameters in the diagnosis. Conclusions. The data obtained indicate the need to adjust the existing index methods for a personalized approach to orthodontic diagnosis, taking into account regional anatomical features. This will improve the accuracy of forecasting and the effectiveness of orthodontic treatment.
