Dental sedation is an advanced method that dentists can perform to reduce patients’ anxiety and fear and provide effective dental treatment. However, not all types of sedation in dentistry can be called absolutely safe, the wrong choice of the drug can lead to serious consequences. The purpose of this systematic review was to analyze current data on complications during sedation procedures, in particular nitrous oxide in pediatric dental practice. The research was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar and Wiley Online Library, Cyberleninka and limited to articles in English and Russian. The main type of sedation used for pediatric dental patients is an inhalational technique known as ‘relative analgesia’, which uses nitrous oxide in oxygen. Inhalation with nitrous oxide/oxygen is recognized as a safe and effective method of reducing anxiety, pain relief and improving communication between the patient and the doctor. Rare side effects are still observed, the study of which will be devoted to this literature review in order to avoid complications in the future and get the best treatment result.
