Neuropathy of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) after extraction of a mandibular third molar is relatively rare. Depending on the degree of nerve damage, it can be permanent or temporary. IAN neuropathy manifests as anesthesia, dysesthesia, or paresthesia in the innervation zone of the injured nerve: half of the lower lip, the gingiva, and the teeth on the corresponding side of the jaw. Causes of IAN neuropathy include nerve injury during a block anesthesia, creating access to the tooth, odontosection, or during the removal of the tooth from the socket. This article presents a case of managing a patient with IAN neuropathy and describes possible ways to prevent this condition.
