The aim of the study is to create a dataset of oral images for the development of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for the diagnosis of cancerous and precancerous conditions of the oral cavity, due to the relatively high prevalence and late diagnosis of these conditions in the Russian Federation. Materials and methods: after informed written consent, oral images were obtained using a MeditI500 computer scanner, and clinical data were extracted from the medical records of patients visiting the Clinical Dental Clinic (Ufa). Then, the authors edited the data, categorized the images and wrote the annotation. Results: The dataset, including 895 anonymized images obtained from 567 patients, was classified into four different categories: healthy, benign, precancer and oral cancer. The images were annotated with polygonal boundaries of the oral cavity and lesions. Each image was accompanied by patient metadata, including age, gender, diagnosis, and risk factor profiles such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and smoking status. Conclusion: Annotated images along with patient metadata (dataset) can be used to improve the development of ML and AI algorithms.
